Your web site may have several main sections, and each of these
sections can be either a single page, or a group of linked pages.
Now is the time to decide how many pages you will have and how long each
page will be.
You'll have a "Home Page" of course, and keep it short, about 2 or 3
"screens" (a screen is the amount of information you can see on your
computer monitor without scrolling). You want it to load fast and
direct people to the other pages. It will have a brief introduction
about the theme(s) you have chosen and a table of contents of the rest of
your pages. You might want to put some pictures here but remember to
keep this page short.
Next you might want to have a "bio" page with your picture and personal
information on it. You probably want pages on each of your themes
and a page of "links" to your favorite sites. Make a diagram of the pages
and decide how they will link to each other.
If you have lots of information you'll need to choose between long or
multiple short pages. Long pages are useful if you expect people to
print out or download your pages for future reference off-line (like this
document, for example). Short pages, of two or three screens that
treat just one subject each, load fast and viewers don't have to scroll up
and down as much (important for Web TV users).
Once you have your site organized it's time to learn how to create the
individual pages. Hopefully, you've been "surfing" the Web and have
some idea of how you want your pages to "look". Next I'll present
some guidelines on designing a page your viewers will want to come
back to.
